Understanding Different Investor Groups
VC and PE as asset classes lack liquidity, making it difficult for most investment firms to fill their new funds. This was a clear takeaway from SuperVenture & SuperReturn conference in Berlin and something we hear from fellow GPs repeatedly these days. Understanding different sub-groups of LPs including their asset class exposures, investment activities, return and strategic expectations has become critical.
While most episodes of this newsletter have been focused on the investment process across sourcing, screening, due diligence, and more; being data-driven doesn’t stop here but also has an impact on how investors raise their funds, run their firms, and help their portfolio companies.
Therefore, we decided to launch a data-driven series focused on various LP groups such as Family Offices, Fund of Funds, Wealth Managers, Pension Funds, Endowments, Governments, and more via limitedpartnerlist.com.
Access the full list for all LP categories via the website or stay tuned as we share category by category snapshots across today’s and future Sunday Resources episodes.
Category #1: Family Offices
Let’s start with a group that has collectively increased exposure into private market investing over the last years.
What are Family Offices?
Family offices are private entities established to manage the wealth and investments of one or more ultra-high-net-worth families. The decision maker is called a Principal and depending on the number of families, it’s either a Single Family Office (SFO) or a Multi Family Office (MFO).
These offices are unique in the financial world, offering a comprehensive suite of services tailored to private wealth management, including estate planning, tax services, and philanthropy, in addition to investment management. In the realm of venture capital, growth, and private equity, family offices play a pivotal role due to their flexibility, long-term investment perspective, and the significant discretionary wealth they control.
Distinctive Features of Family Office Investments
Family offices are distinct from other types of LPs such as pension funds or institutional investors in several ways:
Control and Confidentiality: Family offices typically prefer investments that offer greater control over investment decisions and maintain high levels of confidentiality, reflecting the personal nature of their wealth.
Strategic Alignment: Investments are often chosen based on the family’s values and goals, which can include social impact considerations, long-term wealth preservation, and industry preferences.
Flexible Investment Horizons: Unlike institutional investors, family offices are not bound by the same liquidity constraints, allowing them to pursue opportunities that require a longer time to mature.
